Dear Zvi,

Thanks so much for calling this to my attention! A chapter of my doctoral dissertation is devoted to the 1916 adaptation of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. When I did a literature search on the book, Evans's article was one of the comparatively few that came up, and it is a real jewel! In fact, my argument revolves around the centrality of the illustrations to the overall experience of reading the book. If it weren't for his article, I'd still be beating my head against the wall looking for something to say about the movie.

I take it he's a member of this list? If so, my most heartfelt thanks to him for writing that article, and for making it available on-line. And of course, to you, Zvi, for the amazing web site.

I guess that the excellent article you refer to is Art Evans' July 1998
article posted, thanks to Art's generosity, in the Academic Scholarship
section

complete
text of the article, together with all the original pictures (over 50 of
them).
