The JV Forum has enabled us to have countless informational exchanges and
critical dialogues--for which many of us recently thanked and congratulated
Zvi.

So I'm not sure it's a smart idea to stage questionable pranks in this
venue, especially since Garmt didn't "play fair" in the British Detective
story sense: both his set up and his punch line distinctly PREDATED April
Fool's Day.

Another issue, then, is his credibility from now on: in the future how are
we to know Garmt isn't bamboozling us whenever he makes a scholarly
announcement? How can we be sure we aren't wasting our time when we offer
him our assistance or professional insights? He's in the shoes of the
little boy who cried "Wolf!" How can we tell when it's the real thing?

Jokes, wit, and humor are swell stuff, and God knows we don't want to ban
them from the Forum. But we also don't want busy people spinning their
wheels. Next year, let's keep it clean: April Fool's Day gags only on April
1, please. So if we're suckers, at least we had a fair chance.

All the best,
Rick Walter in Albuquerque.

Dear friends,

Thank you all for going along with this story. I was glad to see that so
many of you were enthusiastic about the find, even after Jacques
Crovisier's hint at the date of this Saturday. I admit that I felt an
occasional pang of guilt, when some of you went out of their way to dig up
information on wax cylinders, or got scared about the plans to play the
cylinders at home on an old machine, or offered to contribute in the costs
of the project. But I really enjoyed all your reactions.

I hope you are not too disappointed that this was just a hoax. Rest
assured that should something like this ever turn up for real, I'll do my
utmost best to make sure all Vernians will profit.

Cheers, and thanks for the good laugh,
Garmt.
