V-1. Play Collections

• Les Voyages au théâtre by Jules Verne and Adolphe d’Ennery. Paris, J. Hetzel, 1881. 378 p., 68 illustrations by Benett, Henry Meyer, Riou and Férat.

  Three plays are published in this volume: “Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours,” “Les Enfants du capitaine Grant” and “Michel Strogoff.”

  The three volumes (only 30 copies) of the Manuscrits nantais were published by the Municipality of Nantes more than ten years after having bought Jules Verne’s manuscripts from the Verne family in 1978 (around eight millions French Francs). The objective of the publication was to strengthen the copyright of the Ville de Nantes onto these manuscripts (most of them never published before). This publication was a quick transcription from the manuscripts into a computerized text processing system, without considering Verne’s own corrections and modifications and therefore is not accurate nor reliable.

   Historical drama in 5 acts in verses. Possibly written in 1845-1847. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 2, p. 441- 553. Some bibliographers mention a nonexistent Verne play “Cesar Borgia”, confusing it with “Alexandre VI - 1503”.

2. [CP] La Conspiration des poudres.
   Historical drama in 5 acts in verses. Written in 1847-1848. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 2, p. 555-725.

3. [DR] Un Drame sous Louis XV.
   Historical drama in 5 acts in verses. Written in 1849. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 2, p.727-841.

4. [GD] La Guimard.
   Comedy in 2 acts in prose. Probably written between 1850 and 1853. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 2, p. 291- 360.

5. [TY] La Tour de Montlhéry.
   Drama in 5 acts. Possibly written between 1852 and 1856 with the collaboration of Charles Wallut. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 1, p. 361-397.

   Draft of a comedy on the nine muses. Written around 1847(?). Unpublished manuscript, Amiens, Bibliothèque municipale.

2. [QH] Le Quart d’heure de Rabelais
   Vaudeville in one act (21 scenes) in prose. Written around 1848. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 1, p. 147-171.

3. [DG] Don Galaor
   Draft of a vaudeville in two acts (15 and 11 scenes). Written around 1848-1849. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 1, p. 9-20.

4. [ON] On a souvent besoin d’un plus petit que soi
   Draft on a play in one act (19 scenes). Written in 1849. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 1, p. 29-37.

5. [PA] Les Pailles rompues
   Comedy in one act and in verses (22 scenes). Written in 1849. Staged 12 times in 1850, 43 times in 1854, 1 time in 1855, 1 time in 1857 and 46 times in 1872. Published by Beck (Paris) in 1850 (16 pages, 500 copies).

6. [QQ] Quridine et Quiridinerit
   Italian comedy in three acts in verses. Written in 1850. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 2, p. 843-956.

7. [CA] Les Châteaux en Californie ou Pierre qui roule n’amasse pas mousse
   Comedy-proverb in one act in prose. Written in 1851. Never staged. Published:

   Vaudeville in one act in prose. Written between 1848 and 1851. Never staged. Published in the Manuscrits nantais, vol. 1, p. 83-145.

10. [SV] Les Savants.
    Comedy (Comédie sérieuse) in 3 acts. The manuscript is considered as lost, so never staged and never published. Mentioned in letters by Verne with his parents.

11. [LV] Monna Lisa
    Comedy in one act in verses. Written in 1852 with Michel Carre (1819- 1872). Public reading at the General Meeting of the Academie d’Amiens, May 22nd, 1874. Never staged. Published:

   Tagedy in verses written in 1845, according to Marguerite Allotte de la Fuye. No known manuscript.

2. [FC] Les Fiancés bretons
   Opéra-comique mentioned by Jules Verne in a letter to his mother in January 1851. No known manuscript.

3. [NB] (Unknown title)
   Comedy-intermezzo in verses written in 1853-1854 and staged in Nantes. mentioned only by Marguerite Allotte de la Fuye and Jean Jules-Verne. No known manuscript.

4. [RM] Le Page de madame Malbrough
   Operette in one act by Edouard Vierne. Staged 74 times between 1858 and 1854. Never published. Many Verne biographers are mentioning this play under Verne’s works, confusing both authors.

5. [VD] Le Voyage dans la Lune
   Opéra-féerie in four acts by Albert Vanloo, E. Leterrier and Arnold Mortier. Music by Jacques Offenbach. Sources are De la Terre a la lune and Autour de la lune by Jules Verne. Staged 248 times between 1875 and 1877. Published in Paris by Tresse Libraire-Editeur in 1877, 32 p. No collaboration by Jules Verne.
