Here are some others:
The passengers of LE CHANCELLOR wrote their names on the wall of a cave when
their ship was grounded for a while (chap. XXI).
In HATTERAS, there are several instances of such "markings"--not only the
one mentioned by Garmt, but also "EI 1849" in chapter XV (from their
predecessors, the "Entreprise" and the "Investigator") as well as the plaque
of black marble left on Beechey Island to the memory of Franklin, Crozier,
and Fitz-James (chap. XX).
And there's the "carnet" left behind by Docteur Johausen in LE VILLAGE
AERIEN (chap. VII).
This very rich motif of "following in the footsteps of those who had gone
before" (who left markers behind charting the way) seems omnipresent in
Verne's works.
Best,
Art
