On reading in your email that Verne writes about passers who would add a
stone to a grave, my first thought was that he was referring to little stones. It
is the custom in some religions, when you visit the grave of a loved one,
that you leave a little stone on the headstone to signify that the deceased is
not forgotten and has received a visitor.
