I do not completely agree with this assumption for France… although
being only able to advance any other arguments than circumstantial
evidences… The principal one is that the most famous novels of JV were
(and are!) always published with new editions specifically for youth,
for example the (somewhat disastrous) Bibliothèque Verte but also
others illustrated very well and sometimes with accompanying notes. I
think that these editions correspond to a real and spontaneous request
because JV was few or not studied at school in France! Paradoxically
JV was never regarded as a serious author in this country and thus
never belonged to the authors whose texts were studied at school. For
example JV misses in the “Lagarde et Michard” devoted to the 19th
century literature, a basic work for the literary studies within the
colleges. I do not know the current situation (I am 60) but in this
matter things change very slowly …
