Bernhard is undoubtedly right....literary activity amongst the young has changed. Amongst my various responsibilities I am President of the Alliance Française de Glasgow and periodically use its quite large library. I found that there is only one book by Verne...Paris au XXième siecle....not the most thrilling of books for young persons. When I asked the Librarian why there were not other Verne books she told me that the emphasis ( in response to public demand) was now on purchasing videos and DVDs which took priority in the budget over buying books. In fact the collection is no longer called a "library" but a "Centre de Ressources". Amongst the most popular borrowings, apart from films, relate to viewing regions for choice of holidays or second home purchase. I suppose that a library has to follow popular demand or it will not be used but I still feel uncomfortable when the Alliance appoints a Librarian that the priority is for someone trained in Information Technology rather than someone with a detailed knowledge of French Literature...or maybe I am just getting old!
