Treetops

I have been looking at "Village in the Treetops". Once again Verne has hit the nail on the head after 100 years by siting this novel in Darfour, central Africa, site of the current troubles.

It is also easy to see why this novel was not popular in England, with its negative remarks about the french, belgian, dutch, german, etc invaders.

Our heroes, who are introduced in the first pararaph, proclaim themselves as tourists, spectators only. But it soon appears that they are tourists of a sort who have been on an elephant hunt for tons of ivory! Such are the ever present contradictions in Verne.

Incidentally a comparison with the I.O. Evans translation (more free and much more readable) shows that he only omitted one paragraph in this chapter, the list of explorers.
