Dear Peter,

The telegram says "décédée" (died/expired) instead
of "décidée" (decided) and the German translation
says "VERschieden" instead of "ENTschieden", which
is not very likely either. One single letter creates
the misunderstanding in French, but for this, it is
necessary that van Mitten does not go on reading...

It's a typical "deus ex machina" and I must say that
I had the same feeling about Keraban as to its suitability
for theatre (not directly film, but times change).
Jules Verne had theatre in mind when writing Keraban,
he uses a rather typical VAUDEVILLE plot und we should
always bear in mind his big love of theatre...

Keraban together with Antifer is among my favourite books
(besides the so-called big novels). Estonishingly enough,
as a teenager, I was strangely attracted by Claudius Bombarnac
because of the lack of action for quite a long time (showing
that Jules Verne tried to evolve within the limits set to
him by the VOYAGES EXTRAORDINAIRES programme...)
