Dear friends,
I consider "Kéraban" as one of the lesser works of Verne.
You cannot expect each production of a great writer to be a great work.
I adore Hemingway for "The Sun Also Rises", "Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", but I can't say I enjoy "Across the River and Into the Trees" as much as I do the former three.
"Kéraban" looks like a pastiche of "80 Days" and Verne is not as successful with Kéraban as he is with Phileas Fogg .
Perhaps Verne is not at home with a regressive character like Kéraban , whereas with a progressive Fogg he is perhaps at his best. And neither Bruno and Nizib combined together can overcome a Passepartout.
Tim Unwin would produce a much better literary analysis I am sure, but anyway I think Kéraban is nothing more than a medium vaudeville.
Best,
Nejat
