In the Dutch translation, there is no wordplay at all. The telegram reads
something like "Since five weeks, Mme Van Mitten dead for all her friends,
and departed for Constantinople." Van Mitten stops reading at "Mme Van
Mitten dead", hence the confusion. Very lame indeed. Other Dutch
translation may have translated it differently; I'd have to check.

The mistake made in the French text was actually inspired by something
that happened to some friends of Hetzel, who got a telegram announcing the
death of a relative, who wasn't dead at all, but had just decided to do
something I can't remember.

Cheers,
Garmt.
