One more thing, Peter . . .

Whether my notion "doesn't change anything" depends on what we mean by
"change".

If Nemo's remark in Mysterious Island Pt III Ch. XVI -

"[Aronnax was] taken aboard my ship sixteen years ago [as of 1868]", i.e.
that Aronnax boarded the Nautilus in 1852 -

and his remark -

- "for thirty years [as of 1868] I have lived beneath the waves" - i.e.,
that Nemo's submarine life began in 1830) -

- are reasonable after all, and deliberately stated in such a way as to
contrast with what are identified in Verne's Editorial Note as "false dates"
-

-then it follows that the novel's long-alleged "internal inconsistencies"
don't exist.

The only remaining "contradiction", then, would be with the real world,
since there is no Nemo, Cyrus Smith, etc. therein. Novels, of course, are
supposed to do that!
