I had not read that interview (so thank you very much for drawing it to my attention), but the fact he is not in the Pantheon (despite the fact that Dumas pere and Hugo are) still does sound like a massive smack in the face for him.

Hello Harry,

Verne did receive honours during his lifetime. He was made an officer
in the Légion d'honneur, and his works were crowned by the French
Academy. But indeed, he was never elected a member of that academy,
although at one point he had good hopes of becoming an "immortal".
Have you read the interview with Sherard
(http://jv.gilead.org.il/sherard.html)? It contains some quotes on
this matter.
