On the afternoon of 30th August 1859, Verne boarded the little steamer
SS Rob Roy and sailed the length of Loch Katrine. Fifty years later he
sailed on the same boat in the opposite direction on the 16th July.
The attached photo shows the Rob Roy at the hotel at Stronochlachar (now
drowned by the raising of the loch level for Glasgow's water supply)
where passengers embarked and disembarked. The coaches are clearly
visible which transported passengers between Inversnaid to connect (like
Verne) with the steamer on Loch Lomond. This route (Glasgow-Loch
Lomond-Loch Katrine) was exploited by Verne in Les Indes noires (Chapter
18) where he specifically mentions the Rob Roy.
The photo must be more or less exactly as Verne experienced Loch Katrine.
