I. Voyages Extraordinaires
In the following, we list Jules Verne’s fifty-four novels published in
his lifetime, world-famous as the Voyages Extraordinaires
(VE), or Extraordinary Journeys. Following François
Raymond in his anthology Jules Verne (Le livre d’or de la
science-fiction, Presses Pocket, Paris, 1986), we list for each novel three
publication dates:
- Serialization, mainly in Jules Hetzel’s periodical: the Magasin
d’Éducation et de Récréation (for short, Magasin).
- In a book form, the Hetzel’s in-18 edition, which is
always the first original edition.
- In an illustrated large-format book, the Hetzel’s in-8°
edition, which is never the first original edition (the only
exception is Claudius Bombarnac).
By contract (we know six contracts between Verne and Hetzel), Verne had
to deliver every year a certain amount of volumes. A VE can
be one, two or three volumes. When Verne and Hetzel corresponded, they
counted Verne’s production in volumes.
For the in-8° editions, Hetzel published single, double or triple
books :
- A single in-8° book can only contain a VE written in
one volume, even if this novel would have been combined with another
novel (both one volume each) to make a double in-8° book,
- A double in-8° book can contain :
- one VE written in two volumes or
- two VE written in one volume each. Note that in this case,
the two VEs were also issued separately, as single
in-8° books.
- A triple in-8° book can only be :
- Les Enfants du capitaine Grant,
- L’Ile mystérieuse,
- Mathias Sandorf.
