There is an article in today's New York Times (Monday, March 2, 1998, Page
A4) about the lighthouse on the Argentina island of Isla de los Estados,
east of Cape Horn. "Jules Verne captured the importance of the lighthouse in
his novel, published in 1905 shortly after the writer's death." In the 19th
century the waters surrounding this island were a graveyard for ships passing
from the Atlantic to the Pacific. In 1884 Argentina built a lighthouse there
which reduced accidents but in 1902 it was abandoned. Andre Bronner, a French
navigator, and seven compatriots built a replica of the original and
officially donated the lighthouse to the Argentine Navy last Thursday.
