There were a number of successful submarines before the David of the
American Civil War. The David just happened to be one of the first to
be used successfully during wartime (if one does not count the Turtle
of 1776). There was, of course, Robert Fulton's Nautilus (1798), the Spanish
Il Icteneo (1862), Le Plongeur (1863), the Diable Marin (1855), the Intelligent Whale
(1866-1872), and Le Plongeur Marin (1850) among others. A major
influence on the external appearance of Verne's Nautilus was the
non-submersible "cigar ship" of Ross Winans.
