Bonjour, Good Morning or Evening, Guten Tag, Muito Bom Dia...

The jewish origin of Jules Verne is a legend. This legend was born at
the beginning of this century and periodically (like now in our forum)
regains vigor and some credibility. The last impact of this legend was
due to Marc Soriano in 1978 with his biographical book.

How was this legend born ? The first JV biographies mention it, with
more or less details (Claretie 1883, Lemire 1908, Popp 1909). Here is
the story : a polish jew, named Olschewitz, refugee in France, visited
JV and tried to convince him they were parents. Why ? Olschewitz is the
polish version of the french word "aulne" which is the name of a small
tree, a kind of bush growing everywhere in Central Europe. In old
french, "aulne" was called "verne" and that's why both should have
been parents. JV did'nt consider the fact and was just laughing. But
Olschewitz got support from some journalists and the legend is still
today alive...

Please note that today is not the 1st of April.

        Regards, Freundliche Gruesse, meilleures salutations,

        Jean-Michel Margot
