In light of the current discussion of TITANIC, basically most thinking men
knew giant ships were an accident waiting to happen. The actual Verne novel
I've been pointing out to people is A FLOATING CITY, his fictionalized account
of travelling to the USA on the GREAT EASTERN (which was THEN the Largest
Ship.) One character is a doomsayer who lists all the mishaps and accidents
the GREAT EASTERN has already suffered, and travels on it in hopes of an Epic
Disaster.
