I also have Vingt Mille Lieues. The best way to start would be to scan a
critical page like the map page or Nemo on his submarine or the interior of
the Nautilus which are complex illustrations. Many of the pictures in my
version are very black, making bitonal (black and white) scanning not very
useful. Better to scan in grey scale. If you have a 36 bit scanner you can
extract more grey, mine is only 24 bit. Then in Photoshop it may be able to
expand the scale with the histogram function and perhaps extract a bitonal
image of some quality. You can email me a scan 600 dpi if b+w. I have used
color separation in the past to remove foxing which comes outmostly red, so
that the other colors give better images. Obviously some experimentation is
necessary, and some illustrations merit more effort than others. Evans'
article has a number of illustrations to compare with for "goodness", I
don't know where he got his. Zvi sent me the tar file.
