The dash in French is as important as any letter. Many words have a dash in
it : abat-jour for example. Jean-Claude (Van Damme, Hollywood, you know ?),
Jean-Pierre, Jean-Marie, Jean-Luc, Jean-Daniel, etc. are very common first
names in French.
Michel Verne began to add a hyphen between Jules and Verne and sometimes he
is cited as Michel Jules-Verne. So did his son Jean Jules-Verne. And
Jules-Verne became the family (or last) name.
