sous mer??

Could one of the forum members help me with a bit of French language?
If I take the words "sous mer" out of context from "Vingt Mille Lieues
sous les Mers", would the English translation be "under sea"? If not,
what would be the correct French for "under sea"? I do not want plural
"seas" and would like to avoid "the" sea.
