Today I received a copy of the most important book since the
publication of "Paris in the Twentieth Century".

For the first time, the letters between Jules Verne and his publisher
are available.

It is :

CORRESPONDANCE INEDITE DE JULES VERNE ET DE PIERRE-JULES HETZEL
(1863-1886). Etablie par Olivier Dumas, Piero Gondolo della Riva et
Volker Dehs. Tome I (1863-1874). Geneve, Editions Slatkine, 1999, 288
p. ISBN : 2-05-101790-5.

This long awaited book is the first of three volumes which will have
all the known letters between the author and his publisher. The volume
not only contains JV's letters, but also Hetzel's answers. Olivier
Dumas, Piero della Riva and Volker Dehs (French, Italian and German)
did a very accurate job. They are the best JV specialists and are used
to read fluently JV's handwriting.

Most of the letters belong to the National French Library and were
donated in the mid-1950s by Hetzel's heirs.

After a foreword (by Olivier Dumas) explaining the relations between
JV and PJH and the writing conventions used in the book, the volume
opens with a detailed (down on the day and month, not only the year !)
chronological list of the publication of JV's works between 1863 and
1874. The book ends with four alphabetical indexes : Family names,
Magazines, JV's works, Works by other authors.

This book is of course A MUST for every JV specialist and enthusiast.

In 1999, a new biography was published in France, written by the
president of the JV documentation Center in Amiens, Jean-Paul Dekiss :

Decks, Jean-Paul : Jules Verne l'Enchanteur. Paris, Editions du Felin,
1999, 430 p. ISBN : 2-86645-311-5.

This recent biography is well illustrated and takes in account the
most recent discoveries. Dekiss tells JV's life in putting him in his
Century, among his family and friends, always using proven facts to
document his writing.

Another MUST ? For those who read French, YES.

Both books should be available at the FNAC or ALAPAGE sites :
www.fnac.fr and www.alapage.com
