On the whole, I think that Evans' reputation is worse than it ought
to be. It's certainly true that he abridged (and in the case of 20,000
Leagues, over-abridged) many of the books, but not all of the titles
were the hack jobs they are often made out to be. His translation of
Journey to the Center of the Earth is not only very complete but
also very faithful to the original book. He certainly should be given
credit for making many of Verne's previously-untranslated books
available to English-speaking readers.
