If I remember right, there's quite a lot of information about early
submarines and the like in Peter Costello's _Jules Verne: Inventor of
Science Fiction_ (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1978). Fascinating and very
useful if it's true, but since it is entirely unreferenced, one wonders what
to make of it. What is the orthodox scholarly line on this book? Or have I
answered my own question? Tim Unwin.
