JV translations (again)

Those early English translations done by Henry Frith (assuming that he did
*not* do the Routledge version of _Five Weeks in a Balloon_), by George M.
Towle (for Osgood), and by Ellen Frewer (for Sampson Low) are quite
decent--at least the ones I've seen so far.

Several of the Frewer translations are included in the Parke edition (1911),
so I suppose that I shouldn't have denounced this collection quite so
unilaterally in my earlier message. As with most publisher series, there
are good books and bad ones....

Versions to avoid like the plague are:
- the Chapman & Hall _Five Weeks_ (recently reprinted in paperback by Sutton
"Pocket Classics," 1995)
- the omnipresent Griffith & Farran "Hardwigg" versions of _Journey to the
Center of the Earth_
- the equally omnipresent Mercier translations of _20,000_ or _From the
Earth to the Moon_
- the Roth translations of _From the Earth to the Moon_ and _To the Sun? Off
on a Comet!_
