Fellow Vernians,

Thanks, Ralf, for that excellent message about the German translations of JV
(and translating in general). I couldn't agree with you more. The only
translation I'm familiar with that was actually better than the original was
Baudelaire's of the works of Edgar Allen Poe. This probably explains why
Poe, even today, is a more respected writer in France than in America.

To my collector friends: Do any of you happen to own a copy of the 1897
Allison version of _The Floating Island_? If so, would you be so kind as to
quote for me the first two sentences of the first chapter? I am trying to
establish whether this translation was different than one published in the
1896 Sampson Low version.
