I didn't realize that you were affiliated with Project Gutenberg.
Congratulations! A noble task, indeed.

You were right to avoid the Wordsworth reprint of _Five Weeks in a Balloon_.
I believe it is a reprint of the 1926 Dent/Dutton translation by Arthur
Chambers. Although not too bad overall, it is particularly distressing in
that it consistently used the word "nigger" throughout instead of "negro,"
"Negro," or "black" (Verne simply used "Nègre").

The 1996 Wordsworth paperback reprint of _Journey to the Center of the
Earth_, however, is another matter. It is from the 1876 Routledge
translation (perhaps by Henry Frith). Although not perfect, it is a very
serviceable translation--infinitely better than the horrid "Hardwigg"
version. The 1877 Ward, Lock translation by Frederick A. Malleson appears
to be decent as well, but I haven't yet checked it out yet and no modern
reprint for it exists. PG would be doing the e-world a large favor by
scanning either of these two versions and throwing away the "Hardwigg" one.
