In re Dejan's posting on the question of whether Cyrus & Pencroff mean God or
Nemo in discussing "help"--
I don't have citations at hand, but one of the running themes in MYSTERIOUS
is the possibly supernatural nature of the castaway's protector. At one point
when asked how he imagines their benefactor, one of the castaways (I can't
recall if it's Pencroff or Gideon) describes a conventional to the point of
caricature picture of divinity -- an old man on a cloud holding a magic
object.
That when they do find Nemo he is white haired and long bearded, and that he
helps them finally "from beyond the grave," are points to remember in this
literary discussion.
