I don't know about the public's feelings in America, but in the
Netherlands many people thought nuclear power was the ultimate source of
energy, and hardly thought it dangerous - until the 60s or 70s at
least. Then the fear of atomic weapons grew, and there were demonstrations
against placing American nukes in our country. So the point of view
shifted a lot, and in the 50s a nuclear Nautilus would just be seen as a
splendid high-tech thing, and only later it would be associated with
possible danger.
