I visited the Georgetown University Library today to check on what was
there on the shelf. The full Marc descriptions of these books is on the
University library catalog George on the nternet.
Purchase of the North Pole, Routledge publisher, 314 pages. No date.
Chateau of the Carpathians 1894 Merriam, NY 211 pp
Around the world 80 days, Towle xlation, Porter and Coates, Philadelphia,
1873
Field of Ice, Routledge Publisher, 1876, London and NY
The Fur Country, J.R. Osgood Publisher, 1874, translated by N. D'Anvers
(not on shelf, special use only)
Lighthouse at the End of the World translated by Cranstoun Metcalfe, pub by
G.H. Watt, NY, 1924. This is past the cutoff date for public domai, but
there is the possibility the copyright was never renewed as the firm may
have gone out of business. In which case it may be ok to put on the net
even if PG won't accept it yet. Further research necessary. A good copy
with an introduction praising the book by the translator.
Mysterious Island L.E. Kingston translation, Baltimore.
Secret of the Island Kingston, Everyman 1909
20000 Leagues Porter and Coates, Philadelphia, no date.
Baltimore Gun Club, E. Roth translation, (d 1911) King and Baird, 1874
Voyage Round the World (New Zealand) may be part of children of Captain
Grant. Routledge, 264 pp, no date.
There is also a 3 volume set of "Exploration of the World", Scribners,
1908-1912. Vol 1 translated by Dora Lee, Vol 2 none indicated, Vol 3 xlated
by N. D'anvers, 1880 dedication. These are large books and would be a real
enterprise. From the fact that D'Anvers translated one of these, I would
gather that the translation of the Fur country might be a good one.
Most of these are probably the already well worn translations but some may
be interesting. I do not think there is another translation of Lighthouse.
I can withdraw these books by becoming a "Friend of the Library", which
unfortunately requires the donation of a considerable sum, and I am not
sure if it is not required every year! They have several original Hetzels.
Of course copying in the libary at 10 cents per page is allowed, also
rather steep for a whole book.
