Dear Mr Brown,
Please find below an extract from my OUP critical edition of AWED:
Another possible source is the appropriately_named George Francis
Train, who made four trips around the world, the first in two years, and the
second in 80 days in 1870. Like Cook, Train went westwards; but similarities
with Fogg's adventures include the hire of a private train and his being
imprisoned. Train was in France in 1870_1, had previously built railways in
America, and ran for the American Presidency in 1872 _ all ideas that are
echoed in Around the World in Eighty Days.

Subject: George Francis Train as Fogg
I am seeking information for a newspaper article on whether
Jules Verne
based his Around the World in 80 Days character, Phineas
Fogg, on George
Francis "Citizen" Train.
I know Train completed an earlier trip around the world, and
after Nellie
Bly beat the "80 days", Train made another trip coming in at
67 days
to/from Tacoma, Washington. He later made another trip.
If anyone has information on the Train/Verne/Fogg
connection, please e-mail
me at editor~at~tacomadailyindex.com prior to May 20, 2000.
Thank you,
Steve Brown
