        There are more similarities to the Apollo 8 mission in Dec 1968.
        One great place to begin is THE ANNOTATED JULES VERNE: FROM THE
        EARTH TO THE MOON which was annotated by Walter James Miller.

        Of course, the ideal Apollo 11 anniversary would have been last
        year (30th anniversary, 1969-1999). However, perhaps there were
        some articles from last July which could be helpful.

        Verne was mostly an armchair explorer. If I recall correctly,
        this short story was one of his earliest stories. To my
        knowledge, he made just one trip to North America but some of
        the other listmembers will be more up on this than I.
