Tom,
According to the Taves/Michaluk _Jules Verne Encyclopedia_, the first
American edition of Verne's _A Journey to the Centre of the Earth_ was
indeed published by Scribner, Armstrong, in 1873. But "the spine has a
figure peering into a cavern with an upheld latern. There are 52 full-page
woodcut illustrations by Riou in this edition" (106).
