If there were illustrated newspapers and magazines (with advertising) in
that era, try reading those. The advertisements are very useful -- they
show you what was in style or in demand, how much such things cost, and how
things changed as time went by, &c. In the U.S., microfiche spools of
photographic copies, complete with advertisements, of such papers as the New
York Times are available in public libraries; perhaps there is something
equivalent for France and Great Britain.

There used to be a popular series of "everyday life" ("La vie quotidienne .
. ." books published by Hachette in French; it may still exist -- I don't
know. These were books for the layperson ("vulgarisation"). The volumes
I've seen were of variable usefulness, but perhaps the volume or two on that
era may be useful to you.

If you have access to the www, do searches from such pages as
www.altavista.com and www.google.com , both of which allow English and
non-English searches. You may find webpages and references of use to you.

Best of success with the novel!

Ernie Sjogren
