Garm:
After reading the fragment, I think the opposite is the right one:
"Mathias Van Guitt... was a former professor of Natural History at the
Museum of Rotterdam... We believed he appeared comical to his students."
He was a professor indeed (he had students). He teached at the Museum, and
this is the odd one: they learnt Natural History at museums.
I remembered the same condition in "20000 leagues":
"(I [Pierre Aronnax] was) a lecturer [or professor] at the Museum of
Natural History in Paris."
By the way, how do you pronunciate Guitt? As in German chu - itt?

Dear friends,
Mathias Van Guitt (Maison a vapeur) is said to have been a professor at
the Museum of Rotterdam. I am a bit puzzled by this qualification, since
in the Netherlands a professorate is connected with a university. I know
that in some countries the function of director of a museum is on the same
level as a professorate. Was this the case in France in 1880?
Thanks,
Garmt.

Chers amis,
professorat. Etait-ce la situation en France, 1880 aussi?
Merci,
Garmt.
