I have found the website of the "Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle" in
Paris (http://www.mnhn.fr); in my opinion it appears to be a kind of
university.

Perhaps he was a lecturer for a general audience, in the style of the
Royal Society and the like...

It's not a real Dutch name, and it doesn't even look Dutch. Strangely
enough, in the Dutch translation the Museum of Rotterdam is not mentioned
at all, and I had always assumed that Van Guitt was German (despite the
Van instead of Von). So I would pronounce it with a g like in German
'gehen'.
