Jules Verne was discussed in the presidential boudoir last night.
That is, on the weekly series THE WEST WING. Clintonesque President
Josiah Bartlett (Martin Sheen) was lectured by his Hillary-esque wife
(Stockard Channing) after she had been to the dedication of a statue to
Nellie Bly. Annoyed that her husband was unfamiliar with this
early feminist reporter, Mrs. Bartlett mentioned such deeds as her work
uncovering misdeeds in mental institutions and in besting Jules Verne's
around the world record. Bartlett was unimpressed with bettering the time
of a fictional character, and made a crack about 20,000 Leagues.
Eventually, all were reconciled after Bartlett discussed the lack of
monuments to women in history, including Nellie Bly, in his weekly radio
address.
