Annette,
A little extra comment on the laws of copyright. I can only comment on how
they currently stand in the European Community (including Great Britain),
where copyright in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work lasts for
the life of the author and 70 years from the end of the year in which he/she
died - this is retrospective. In the UK, copyright was formerly for 50
years, but this changed in 1996 due to European regulations. Doing anything
in pursuance of arrangements made before 1 January 1995 does not infringe
revived copyright.
Read
http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk/std/faq/copyright/index.htm for
full details.
In the case of Verne's original text copyright would lapse in 1975 at the
latest. I cannot comment on US copyright, as the regulations there are
somewhat different.
In the case of a modern translation, the copyright in the translation would
be vested in the translator assuming they retained copyright and did not
sell it to their publisher. The situation may be a little more complex than
this in some cases, so consultation of the relevant regulations would be
worthwhile.
If you want to go into this in detail I suggest you check:
http://www.bl.uk/services/stb/etalmenu.html
and at:
http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk/
Hope this helps!
Stuart

Subject: Journey to the Center of the Earth
Hi there,
As a Jules Verne enthusiast I am hoping that you are aware of the rules of
copywrite on the Verne material. Can you tell me in particular (if you know)
whether Journey to the Center of the Earth is in Public Domain?
Thanks so much,
Annette Béchamp
