Vernians friends of the Jules Verne forum,

I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Europe, attending the Jules
Verne days in Pazin, visit the Centre de Documentation in Amiens as well as
the "Jules Verne - le retour" exhibition there. Finally I met Philippe
Burgaud, vice-president of the Société Jules Verne in Paris.

All these days, visits and encounters were highly useful.

In Pazin I was received by Davor Sisovic and many others friends, among
them Radenko, the president of the JV Club and head of the Tourist Office
and the Mayor of Pazin, who is also member of the JV Club. Activities there
included "remakes" of Sandorf's trial and escape, ballooning, nationwide
contests, national television coverage and meetings where I had the
opportunity to present "Jules Verne and his time" for the children and "The
JV Renaissance" for a larger audience. After four years of existence, the
Pazin has impressive results and plans:
- Yriarte's travellog translated into Croatian (JV's source for description
of Istria and mainly Pazin - Pisino in JV's text, the Italian name of Pazin),
- M. Ré Dièze et Mlle Mi Bémol, first translation in Croatian with ALL the
illustrations (color and B&W from both editions),
- A new edition of SANDORF in Croatian, with ALL original Hetzel
illustrations and an extensive afterword connecting JV's novel to Istria
and Pazin,
- Planning a Croatian edition of BOMBARNAC,
- Planning a new translation of SANDORF in English, with the objective to
bring this novel to British and American readers easily (the old
translations are no more available and SANDORF can be considered as an
unknown novel in the Anglo-saxon world).

The Conseil régional d'Amiens bought Piero Gondolo della Riva's collection
for an amount of 28 millions French Francs. I was told. During this summer,
the Centre Culturel d'Amiens presents about 200 items of his collection.
There are only primary material presented. Of course, all the cartonnages
are exhibited, but more important, documents like JV's "licence en droit",
or the travel notes JV wrote during his trips to Scandinavia, USA and the
1884 Mediterranean cruise. A catalog is available, put together very
quickly and is less attractive as the others, like Parme or Dinard. In the
Centre de Documentation, I met Cécile Hautière who leads the facility.
There are new publications of difficult to find texts, mainly short stories.

Meeting Philippe Burgaud was a pleasure and he told me about the present
and possible future of the Société JV. My personal feeling is that the
Société, who was leading the Vernian research in the past is now slowly
loosing it. There are two reasons for it:
- Even if Jules Verne is a French novelist and wrote only in French, he is
a planetary writer and belongs to everybody, like Shakespeare, Homer or
Dostoievsky. The French Société, under the lead of Olivier Dumas is still
too closed to the "Hexagone".
- The mushrooming of JV's societies and clubs around the world (mainly due
to the Internet and... Zvi's work!) where, besides the collecting persons,
are scholars and researchers publishing new information and new research.
