Sean,

Interesting to see one of the maps online for the first time - thanks.

[Comment for Ron Miller: This is excellent work, by the way, Ron - nicely
done! SW ]

I downloaded the 50% version of the file and loaded it into Word after
rotating it in Photoshop. It printed out very nicely indeed on my Epson
inkjet printer on A4 plain paper, using 'speed' mode.

The 25% version downloaded much more quickly but the text is on the edge of
usability, even for web use, and, together with the outlines, breaks up if
enlarged or printed.

I also downloaded the full size scan which printed more than adequately at
A3 using the same printer and 'speed' mode, although it took much longer to
download. I would certainly consider printing this on decent cartridge
paper and framing it :-)

I suspect if the jpeg compression was much higher the quality would suffer.

You've not specifically commented on any of the recent discussion regarding
the possibility of me posting the scans you make as a reconstituted Atlas in
PDF form at the suggested www.verneatlas.f2s.com and forming a link
'portal' between Garmt's and your work and other sites as part of a joint
Verne Atlas linkup project to which all might contribute over time.

What are your thoughts on this? There seems to be general interest in the
idea and in contributing other info, but so far nothing concrete has
emerged. If the suggestions discussed have not been of any interest, then I
am equally happy to leave the Atlas in your hands as you have made a good
start on posting the maps.

Stuart

Subject: First scan of Extraordinary Voyages
My first attempt at scanning from Ron Miller's Limited Edition Extraordinary
Voyages has been posted online.
You can find "Map of the Voyage Made, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at
Full Resolution (approx 8.5 x 11 inches, 2988 x 1908 pixels, 1.7MB) at
http://www.oceansonline.com/verne/ron_miller_atlas/miller_20Kworldmap.jpg
You may want to start with the smaller sizes.
A 25% version (approx 17-inch screen size, 147kb) can be found here:
http://www.oceansonline.com/verne/ron_miller_atlas/miller_20Kworldmap_25.jpg
A 50% version (501kb) can be found here:
http://www.oceansonline.com/verne/ron_miller_atlas/miller_20Kworldmap_50.jpg
I would appreciate any feedback on quality, size preferences, compression
preferences (i.e. jpg, gif, png, bmp, ???) and other helpful hints or
suggestions.
The image was scanned using a Canon CanoScan N656U scanner set at 300dpi
resolution. Some "touch up" was done in ArcSoft PhotoStudio2000, basically
increasing contrast to make the blacks blacker and the whites whiter. The
size reductions were done in Microsoft Image Composer, for no reason other
than wanting to see how the maps looked in a different software package. The
whole process took about 15 minutes so it's pretty snappy.
Your comments are appreciated.
And thanks again to Ron for allowing me to scan them and Walter for
providing the rare atlas.
