All the discussion about file formats for the Atlas graphics has been good,
but one perhaps pertinent technical point is missing: JPEG is a "lossy"
compression format. Each time an image is saved in JPEG format a small
amount of information is lost. If the file is opened and then re-saved
several times, the deterioration becomes apparent. If the file is to be
edited more than once a master should be saved in TIFF (24-bit color) or GIF
(8-bit color) or any other non-lossy format.
I generate the graphics on my web pages in TIFF format and only save the
final, edited page image in JPEG format.
