Dear friends,
Your enthusiasm is very helpful for me to ruin my career. I usually read
my mail at Univeristy, and my supervisor has been complaining lately that
I hardly do any work on Mondays... ;)
A lot of discussion on formats and sizes, with a lot of useful remarks.
Here are my ideas on these topics:
- I had no problems with antialiasing in the jpg images, and since these
require fewer kb than gif files, I think they would be the best choice for
the web presentation. However, since jpg is a lossy format, we should work
with tiff and convert to jpg only as a last step.
- The 25% is indeed (almost) too small to read. But it does give a nice
overview, and the map fits in a single screen. It might be a good idea to
present the 25% map first, and make it into a clickable map. The user can
then zoom in on the regions he is interested in. Also, the full-scale map
should be available. It takes a long time to download, but it is worth it.
- A pdf file should be available for printing.
- Sean's thumbnails look very nice. But how would this work out for maps?
One way to find out, let's try it.

Sure, go ahead and make something nice. For the time being, I see three
major parts of this project:
1. Ron's atlas
2. My interactive maps
3. Vernian toponymy
I will just keep on working with my maps on my own server. Perhaps in the
future it will be more convenient to move to the VVV server (if it
supports Perl and you don't mind ginving me a login and password), but
we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Regards,
Garmt.
