I'm not too good on the latitude and longitude, but I understood that
Stone Hill was somwhere along the Alafia River and that the Columbiad
complex was visible across the bay in Tampa. There is a park on the
Tampa penninsula facing east called Jules Verne Park (on Ballast
Point) from which a good view would have been had. Since Florida is only
150 miles acrss, we can see the missle launches from Cape Canaveral
across the state only a few seconds after lift-off. North Port is a
little further south along the coast. Lake Ocechobee is further east.
The highest point in Florida is actually along the Alabama border at
about 350 feet as mentioned. The highest in the peninsula is about 325
feet at Iron Mountain near the town of Lake Wales. It is in an orange
grove and nature preserve built by Edward Bok, the editor of Scribner's
who once met Verne to convince him to participate in a series of
"authorized versions" of formerly pirated works. The Bok "Singing Tower"
carillon is on the summit. The local Tampa sci-fi club calls itself the
Stone Hill science fiction society. Yours, David
