Where is Stone's Hill?
There are three references to its location:

A)

But the difference between 5º 7' and 83º 25' is 78º 18' not 79º22'.

Paris: 2º 20' E Greenwich.
Washington: 77º 00' W Greenwich.

So if we take the longitude 5º 7' W Washington, Stone's Hill is 82º 7' W Greenwich.
["A"]
If we take the longitude 83º 25' W Paris, Stone's Hill is 81º 5' W Greenwich. ["B"]

B)
On the map of the original edition Stone's Hill is located around 27º N 83º W Paris
(=81º W Greenwich). [around "B"] (However, you'll see Lake Okeechobee located north
where it really is.)

C)
(Chapter 14) "En même temps, Barbicane plantait les premiers jalons d'un railway long de
quinze milles et destiné à relier Stone's-Hill à Tampa-Town."

So the distance between Stone's Hill and Tampa Town is 15 miles (=25 km).

As Tampa is located 27º 57' N 82º 27' W Greenwich, if we go 15 miles towards South East
(acording to the travel made by Barbicane), we reach a point 27º 48' N 82º 17' W
Greenwich. ["C"]

[If we measure the distance between Tampa (27º 57' N 82º 27' W) and Stone's Hill "B"
(27º 7' N 81º 5' W), we get 165 km (=100 miles), to cover in 6 hours; is that possible?]

We have three points to choose. "A" is too near the coast. "B" is to near the 28º
parallel. "C" is too far away Tampa.

By the way, Harry, 77+5=82 not 84 :-)

Ever since I downloaded it from the Internet "To the Moon and Back" has been
causing me grief, in terms of figuring out where something is.

According to the book, Stones Hill is "situated eighteen hundred feet above
the level of the sea, in 27~at~ 7' N. lat. and 5@ 7' W. long. of the meridian
of Washington"

Now, this would suggest that it is located at 27° 7' North and as Washington
is located at 77° 1' 48" West, that would place it at 84° 8' 48" West of the
Greenwich Meridian.

I then logged into the Geochache website, and placed the above GPS location
and asked members if they could take a picture of the location, expecting a
flood of photos. No photos arrived, but instead this did:

"It's in the water"

Looking at a map I did indeed note that he was correct.

So my question is "Was there ever an island at 27° 7' North Latitude and 84°
8' 48" West Longitude and if so what happened to it?"
