Gerald, PLANET is based on a FRENCH novel by Pierre Boulle (whose inability to speak English was why giving him sole screen credit for the film BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI -- the English language screenwriters being blacklisted at the time -- was so controversial.) But the "evolutionary novel" was an old genre long before L'ARIEN, and Boulle's novel is more a Swiftian imaginary journey than a Vernian extraordinary voyage.
