2002 marks the 130th anniversary of the publication of "Around the World in
Eighty Days", but following an advert today for a compliation CD of
classical music, I was amazed at how much seemed to be happening in the same
year, so using my copies of World Book (Millennium Edition) and Compton's
2000, here's what else was happening in the same year around the world.

Geography Headlines:

Pine Creek Gold Rush in the Northern Terrorities of Australia
University of Wales, Aberystwyth founded
Hope Valley Resoveroir constructed in Adelaide, South Australia
Construction of the overland telegraph line from Port Augusta to Darwin in
Australia
American Samoa argees to let the United States use Pago Pago Bay as a naval
coaling station
Ayers Rock (or Uluru in native Aborginial) was first sighted
Foundation of Dodge City, Kansas with the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka,
and Santa Fe Railroad

History Headlines:

"Buffalo Bill" Cody began his career as a showman
The New Zealand Wars Ended
The Modoc War (part of the Indian Wars) broke out
Sir John MacDonald leads the Conservative Party to victory in Canada's
general election
The Last Czarina of Russia (Queen Alexandra) was born in Germany
Roald Amundsen was born in Norway
Susan Brownwell Anthony voted in the 1872 Presidential Elections in the US
(and was arrested for casting an illegal vote)
Calvin Coolidge (the 30th president of the US) was born in Vermont

Ulysses S. Grant (general during the American Civil War) re-elected for a
second term of office. He won 286 votes to 63 (on a popular vote of 56% to
44%)

Mussorgsky composed the "Night on a Bare Mountain"
The inventor of "Art Noveau" Aubrey Beardsley was born in Brighton, England
"Middlemarch" wriitten by George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans) was
published

Industry / Technology Headlines:

The Mary Celeste was found floating abandoned in the middle of the Atlantic
Ocean after leaving New York (on November 5th) for Genoa in Italy. Theories
as to why the ship was abandoned range from piracy to a collision with a
giant squid.
Louis Bleriot (the first man to fly across the English Channel) was born in
Cambrai, France
Yellowstone National Park was created.

Science Headlines:

"The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" was published by Charles
Dickens

Sports Headlines:

"The Queensbury Rules" for boxing were launched. The rules, devisied by the
Marquess of Queensbury, required boxers to wear gloves and created
three-minute rounds with a one-minute rest period between rounds. Other
rules were : "That a man down on one knee may not be struck" and "A fallen
man must be given 10 seconds to get back on his feet"

William Whiteley founded the first department store in London, England
Charterhouse School moved to Godlaming (Surrey) from London.
