Dear Sean et al: I have been in contact for several days with Mary Rose-Shaffer, the Pennsylvania teacher preparing to teach 20K to a class who voted for it. But the problem turned out to be that she might be using a pre-contemporary translation, presumably one adopted for her by her school. I have suggested to her that she consult Sean's excellent guide, the annotated editions, etc., but unless I find out exactly what edition of 20K she's using we can't be sure how to proceed. She seems to think the translation problem itself would be an interesting topic for her students, and if they do indeed get some Mercvier Lewis version handed out in class, she can fill in for them by reading for them the important omissions from one of today's reliable versions (Butcher, Brunetti, Miller/Walter). She may be right, but it certainly is tragic to think that the younger generation might still be being fed that 19th-century travesty. Thanks, Sean, for joining with me and Andrew Nash!
for helping this imaginative and eager proponent of SF for schools. Cheers! Walter James Miller
