Dear Mary- How I envy your students who have never read this work, and can
approach it for the first time. I was introduced to the story in 1954, at age
7, when Disney released his film version, and have been hooked on Verne
since. I read the novel the summer following 5th grade, almost certainly the
Mercier Lewis translation.
So, I hope that all this talk of inadequate translations, and the myriad
subtler aspects of this work will not blind your students (or you) to the
pleasure of reading this wonderful adventure.
An awful lot of the meat of the story was not included in the Disney film,
and it no doubt superficially treats Nemo's motivations ( or Aronax's divided
loyalties), but with all its flaws, I still think it's a wonderful film. You
might consider using it as an adjunct to the reading- perhaps before or
after reading as a springboard for discussion on the film's faithfullness (or
lack thereof) to the novel. Sincerely, Roger Leyonmark
