Bill is entirely right to say that "La journee d'un journaliste..." was written by Michel in french; a letter of his father says it clearly, and anyway, Michel did not speak english.
As for the Grousset/Laurie novels, we can say that Verne rewrote them entirely but with some differences. The main plot has been maintained in both novels, but characters changed more or less in "Begum", other characters disappeared completely, some episodes like Marcel escaping from Stahlstadt are entirely new. After the letters from Verne to his publisher, he maintained most of the incidents of "L'Etoile du Sud" and made only some "arrangements" (?!). Unfortunately, the Laurie manuscripts have not been found (only the last chapter of the first Begum-version, published some years ago in the "Bulletin de la Societe Jules verne" de Paris) but we know that Verne did not write new manuscripts but realized his corrections on the proofs.
For a third novel, "L'Epave du Cynthia" (1885), Grousset's ms. exists in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. An analyse has shown that Verne's corrections are merely stylistic ones.
As for the title "Hier et demain", it was a choice made by Hetzel and Michel. Some sketches in the Bibliotheque Nationale show that the publisher hesitated between "Hier et demain" and "Contes d'hier et demain". Jules Verne speaks only of his "volume de nouvelles" or cites in a manuscript the title "Souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse". As Bill says, the title of the novels were chosen only shortly before the publication, and often they were found by the publisher. The french Verne scholar Olivier Dumas thinks the choice and the title of "Hier et demain" belong to Jules Verne, but there is no proof at all. Sorry for my bad English,

I am a first year PhD student (from Luxembourg) at the university of Southampton, UK, and I will be doing my thesis on the adaptation process from novel to screen, taking Jules Verne's novels and their filmic adaptations as my case-study. I am still at an early stage in my research and would really appreciate some clarification on the following issues. Whereas I read about P-J Hetzel and Michel Verne's roles in the creation and reception of Jules Verne's novels and short stories, I am not sure to what extent Verne modified Paschal Grousset's manuscripts of Les 500 Millions de la Begum and L'Etoile du Sud. Did he re-write them entirely or only change certain parts? Also, did Michel Verne write the short story In the year 2889 in English or did somebody else translate the story from French to English before it was first published in the American magazine The Forum? Finally, did Jules Verne choose the title Hier et Demain for a planned short story collection or did his son think of that name when he published the collection in 1910? Sorry for asking all these questions! I am really interested in questions about authorship and control and would like to get the information right. As I am busy putting a filmography of Verne inspired films together, I would also appreciate if anyone has any information or links that you think might be important or interesting for me.
